Autism Treatment – Respen-A and Autism

As I mentioned before in the previous video, I have been using Respen-A therapy in autism treatment for approximately a year. As I mentioned this video is being recorded in October 2010 and I will continue to use this treatment in my practice because I have found it to be very helpful for kids on the Autism spectrum. Like any autism treatment, it is not a panacea, it is not a magic pill, it is not a cure but it is helpful for a good portion of kids a good upwards of 70% maybe even 80% seem to respond quite positively to this treatment.

I have had a few kids in autism treatment who didn’t respond and I have had some kids who reacted negatively to it. It is nothing serious, it usually has to do with irritability, sometimes becoming emotional, hyperactivity, sometimes this is to be expected with any type of new treatment. There really hasn’t been anything negative more than what we’ve seen sometimes with other treatments. No treatment is 100% side effect free but in general biomedical treatments whether you are talking about diet, supplements, Respen-A, B-12 are well tolerated by the vast majority of kids, are not toxic and are not dangerous in autism treatment.

Better Understanding of Respen-A Videos for Autism Treatment

Now just to set the record straight, I am talking to you through these videos as a physician who has been working in the Autism community now for well over a decade. I have done many, many different types of autism treatments and have been around for quite some time and quite experienced with biomedical intervention. I do not receive any financial compensation on Respen-A, I have no financial interest in Respen-A, the people involved in Respen-A haven’t asked me to do these videos. Because I do these videos as an educational format, not only through the blog site, but also posted on YouTube and Vimeo and other video outlets on the internet, this is a way for me to give back to the Autism community just so that you as a parent can get a better understanding of what some of these treatments are about, particularly Respen-A in this case, and hopefully dispel some of the negative press that this treatment has gotten. Because in most respects here I do really feel it is unwarranted and it really has to do with I think people just don’t understand what this treatment does and what it’s about and really understand how it works. So we’ll just move forward at that point but I just wanted to make it clear that I have no vested financial interest, I am not getting commissions or kick backs or any sort of that with respects to me discussing or using this treatment in my practice.

This is going to be a series of videos with respects with my experience in autism treatment with the therapy called Respen-A. Now Respen-A I have been using in my practice for approximately one year now. We are in October of 2010 so around this time last year is when I first started using Respen-A for a number of kids on the Autism spectrum in hopes that it would help with speech, socialization, awareness, less self stimulatory behavior, less sensory issues, etc. In that time I have actually garnered quite a bit of experience in using this treatment, there’s always more to learn. But I have been very pleased with what I have seen over this past year as far as the clinical benefits of this Autism treatment.

Most Benefited in Autism Treatment Using Respen-A

And just like I have mentioned, from the speech standpoint, from the socialization standpoint, from a focusing and attention standpoint, from a self stimulatory standpoint it has been very favorable. The two main areas that I feel have been helped the most are speech as well as socialization. Now speech means that kids have become more verbal and their language has become more complex. As some parents have described to me, their kids’ speech has become more purposeful, has become more specific, more deliberate. And then the socialization aspect is kids just become more aware of children around them, more interested in interacting and happier to do so. Mood has also been improved with this therapy as well.

Percentage Rate of some Types of Autism Treatment

So from my experience, I can’t account for anybody else, other doctors, whatnot within the biomedical community, but from my experience this has been a very, very helpful therapy. I will continue to use it in my practice as one of the primary things I have done because I have seen it be helpful for so many kids. I would say at this point, from an approximation standpoint, or excuse me from a percentages standpoint we are talking a good 70% – 75% upwards of maybe 80% positive response rate. From the biomedical standpoint that is pretty good. If you are looking at the gluten and casein free diet which generally has about a 60% positive response rate, methyl B-12 which is certainly very high, in many cases upwards of 90% – 94% positive response rate, treating yeast which is certainly very high and other types of nutritional supplementations to round out that basic format if you will, those foundational remedies for biomedicine. In my estimation Respen-A falls within one of the higher ranking therapies so far that I have been using now and have seen over the past number of years. So in subsequent sections of this video series I am going to be talking a little bit more about Respen, Reserpine and some of the controversies that have been circulating about this autism treatment therapy. Biomedical Autism Treatment – Cholesterol and Autism

In talking about autism treatment, It’s important to touch on certain aspects such as Respen-A, cholesterol, oxytocin, anti-yeast therapy, supplements, etc. If you have not done a cholesterol test on your child, or, let’s say that they’re due for some other blood work, or you’re going back to your pediatrician to do some blood work…It’s a really good idea to check for total cholesterol while you’re at it.

Total cholesterol is a marker of cholesterol level in the blood. And we know that cholesterol is very important for brain function. We know that cholesterol is a major precursor to various hormones in the body which tend to run low for people as they age but they can also be low in kids.

Cholesterol is also critically important as a stabilizing chemical to that helps to bind the oxytocin more effectively at its receptor site, and it improves the function of the oxytocin receptor so that whatever oxytocin is being produced, it works more efficiently. Cholesterol is also an important autism treatment.

We also know that oxytocin – another autism treatment – is a hormone in the brain that is very much involved in social bonding, facial expression recognition, and voice cue emotional recognition – it helps with people being more connected on a human level. Without oxytocin our brains are not wired correctly to create the social interest and bonding that is so important in human interaction. So the cholesterol level’s critically important and what they’ve found is that when the cholesterol level is low, kids are less social, they have more behavioral problems, they have more sleep problems, sometimes aggressive, irritability, self injurious behavior. So it’s something that you want to look at it production in your child’s body. There is a link between cholesterol and there is a link between oxytocin as well. Both of these chemicals have a relationship with Respen-A as well which helps to coordinate the beneficial influence of all of them.

So please, if you’re going to do some blood work, make sure your doctor runs that total cholesterol level and we would like to see a level above 160, ideally between 160, 170 would be nice, at least in my opinion, for all individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

I have had some good experience with a particular remedy called Respen-A. Respen-A is a patch, it is a homeopathic derivative of something called reserpine which is an herb that has been used for many years to help lower blood pressure as well as to treat some of the core issues with respects to kids on the spectrum. What Respen-A definitely appears to be doing is helping with some of those core issues, the eye contact, the affection, the cognitive awareness, kids just being more aware and more engaged socially. I have also seen some decreased self stimulatory behavior and improved sensory issues with kids using Respen-A. One thing I would like people to be aware of is the Respen-A therapy. Like any remedy or anything that has come forth within the biomedical community for special needs kids, nothing is a magic bullet. Nothing works 100% of the time for 100% of the kids. But in my opinion from what I have seen so far the Respen-A definitely has some positive influence on kids particularly in the area of eye contact, particularly in the area of socialization and just the willingness, not only the willingness to socialize with other kids but just being more engaged with their family. So Respen-A could be a useful thing for you to talk to your physician about. It is very easy to take, it is a patch, it is worn 12 hours on 12 hours off and it is a very useful remedy.
